We are incredibly grateful to the families in our community who turn their personal challenges into action that helps others. On April 18, Julie and Sol participated in a Firewalk for PC at Mumbles Cricket Club in Swansea, Wales, raising funds to support the work of PC Project.
Julie’s husband, Tom, and her son, Tim, both live with Pachyonychia Congenita (PC), an ultra-rare and painful genetic skin condition that causes severe blisters and thick calluses on the feet. For many people with PC, even walking can be extremely painful.

After a particularly difficult summer with Tim’s feet, the family wanted to give back to the community that had supported them. Their firewalk fundraiser will help PC Project continue its work to support patients, provide genetic diagnosis, and fund research toward better treatments for PC.
We are deeply thankful to Julie, Sol, and their family for their courage and generosity.

“On Saturday 18 April, we ran our 3rd Firewalk for PC! Like previous years, the event drew a lot of spectators and was both really uplifting and a lot of fun! Even better, thanks to the combined efforts of volunteers, participants, and local supporters, the event raised over £6,000 to support the PC Project!
A total of 37 people took on the Firewalk challenge, with around 150 spectators attending to show their support. The Swansea Aber Taiko drum band opened the event with a powerful performance, and the atmosphere throughout the evening was helped along by a local volunteer DJ, a well‑supported raffle, and plenty of food – including around 150 burgers, 40 sausages, and a generous selection of homemade cakes.
One of the most striking aspects of the event was how quickly people stepped forward to help. A friend who works on BBC Radio Wales set me up with a call in to discuss PC and the event. Raffle prizes were donated within days, volunteers offered to bake, and others took on roles at the BBQ and around the site. Even the drum band’s involvement came through one of the walkers, who arranged their performance at short notice. The sense of community support was clear throughout the planning and on the day itself.
It’s always scary putting yourself out there, especially with such a hidden condition like PC, but the support we received was incredible. We are extremely grateful to everyone who contributed – whether by walking, volunteering, donating, or cheering us on from afar!
I’d be happy to help anyone who wanted to organise a similar event in the future, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me through the PC Project! Julie”
